HISTORY OF TERRACOTTA

Terracotta, the Italian term for baked natural earth is one of the oldest form of natural building material. This eco-friendly & durable material has been in usage since 10,000 BC. Several stunning figurines and pottery made of Terracotta have been discovered from the sites of excavation of Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilization, which now reside in some of the most prestigious art galleries around the world. Some of the most beautiful architectures in ancient Europe and Egypt have also been created using Terracotta.

One of the most striking evidence of Terracotta’s timelessness is China’s Terracotta Army or the Terracotta Warriors and Horses. The Terracotta Warriors are a collection of warriors and horses depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. They were buried with the emperor in 210 – 209 BCE and discovered in the year 1974. They depict the architectural marvel of the ancient Chinese along with the durability of Terracotta and have been on display around the world at various points of time.

It is because of this timeless quality, maintaining the aesthetic appearance; combined with an incredible ability to withstand water, fire and other natural elements that Terracotta continues to be the preferred material for construction

MVCP

MVCP-Matha Vaishnavi Clay Products is the brainchild of Mr. V. Baburao. Growing up experiencing the many benefits and goodness of Terracotta, our founder Mr. V. Baburao felt compelled to share it with the generations to come. So he started the venture in the year 1985 sourcing natural clay from the Bayyaram pond which is located just 5 KM from where he set up the factory. Soon as more and more people experienced the high quality tiles, the business grew and now; since 2002, the company is being held by the 2nd generation of the family.

From the day of inception till this day, one thing remains unchanged - “Our commitment to quality.” At MVCP, we continue to acquire clay from the Bayyaram pond. The pond is located just 5 Km from our factory so we get fresh natural clay from there. Since it is natural clay, it is resistant to heat and cold which maintains the room temperature below the outside temperature by a minimum 2 – 5oC. The clay is de-aired using a vacuum extruder thus making it ready for preparation. It is then ground using a pulverizer to obtain a smooth finish. This process is applied by very few companies in India. Then the dried and smoothly ground clay is pressed using an electric motor press to the desired shape, size and design. Currently 66 different designs are available with us. Once pressed, they are then kiln-fired at 1000oC. This increases the durability and the strength of the tile with high colour retention and negligible maintenance requirement.
